Splitting 4 ways. Tipping norms vary by country and service — 15–20% is typical for sit-down restaurants in the US; many places elsewhere round up or add service automatically.
This tip calculator does the two sums you actually need at the end of a meal: how much to tip, and what each person owes once the bill is split. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage — the common presets are one tap away — and set how many people are sharing; the tip, the total, the amount per person and the tip per person all update at once.
The arithmetic is simple but easy to fumble under a waiter's gaze: the tip is the bill times the percentage, the total is the bill plus that tip, and both are divided by the number of people. Worked example: an $80 bill at 20% split four ways is a $16 tip, a $96 total, and $24 each. No rounding is forced on you — the exact figures are shown so you can round up yourself if you like.
Tipping customs vary widely, and the calculator takes no view: 15–20% is normal at US sit-down restaurants, while in much of Europe and Asia people round up or a service charge is already included — check the bill before adding more. Everything runs in your browser; the numbers you type are never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In US restaurants, 15% is standard and 18–20% marks good service. Many other countries tip little or nothing because service is included — always check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip.
How do I split a bill with tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. This calculator shows both the total per person and each person's share of the tip, so an even split takes no mental arithmetic.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette says the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity — the difference is small. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill and the calculator works from that.
