How the weighting works

Each component's contribution to your final result is its percentage score multiplied by its weight. Score 80% on a paper worth 40% of the qualification and you have banked 32 percentage points of the final total; score 70% on a second 40% paper and you hold 60 points with 20% of the assessment still to play for. The calculator does exactly this arithmetic — score × weight, summed — which is the same whether the components are GCSE papers, A-level papers or university modules.

Two numbers fall out of it, and they answer different questions. The weighted average so far (60 points across 80% of the weight is an average of 75%) tells you how you are performing. The points banked (60) tell you what is safe: even scoring zero from here, your final result cannot fall below the points already earned. The gap between those two framings is where most manual calculations go wrong — an 75% average does not mean 75% is guaranteed.

Worked example: what does the last paper need?

Take the calculator's defaults: two papers scored 64/80 (80%) and 56/80 (70%), each worth 40% of the qualification, with a final component worth 20% still to sit. Banked so far: 0.80 × 40 + 0.70 × 40 = 60 percentage points.

For a 75% finish, the remaining 20% of the assessment must supply 75 − 60 = 15 points, and 15 points from 20% of the weight means averaging 75% on it — entirely doable for someone averaging 75% already. For an 85% finish the sum is 85 − 60 = 25 points from 20% of the weight: 125%, which no mark scheme awards. The calculator states that outright rather than printing a number over 100 and leaving you to notice, and it also shows the best finish still available — banked points plus the full remaining weight, 80% in this example. Knowing the ceiling matters as much as knowing the requirement: it tells you whether the target conversation is about effort or about arithmetic.

Why this page will not guess your GCSE or A-level grade

Most grade calculators map your percentage onto a letter or number grade using invented thresholds — 90% for a grade 9, 80% for an A, and so on. Those numbers are fiction. Real grade boundaries are set by each exam board after each summer's papers have been sat and marked, using statistical predictions and senior examiner judgment, precisely so that a harder paper does not cost a cohort its grades. They differ by subject, by board and by year, and they are published at 8am on results day — August 13th for A-levels and August 20th for GCSEs in 2026 — not before.

The modern qualifications are also linear: raw marks from all papers are added and the boundary applies to the total, so per-paper boundaries published by the boards are explicitly notional, for illustration only. And the 9-1 GCSE scale is anchored statistically, not by fixed percentages — the bottom of grade 7 aligns to the old bottom of an A, grade 4 to the old C, and grade 9 is set by a formula deliberately tighter than the old A*. A calculator that hardcodes any of this is describing a system that does not exist. This one gives you the number that is actually yours — the weighted percentage — and leaves grading to the people who set the boundaries.

Edge cases and limits

Weights that do not reach 100% are treated as work still to come — that is the point of the target mode. Weights that exceed 100% are rejected as an input error rather than silently rescaled, because a silent fix hides a typo that changes every answer. Components with different maximum marks are handled naturally, since each is converted to a percentage before weighting; you can mix a 30-mark coursework piece with 80-mark papers freely.

What the calculator does not model: rounding policies (boards round at the total-mark level, and this page works in exact percentages), UMS conversions from the old modular system (retired — modern A-levels add raw marks), and tier restrictions on GCSE papers, where Foundation tier caps the available grades regardless of percentage. For university modules, check whether your institution weights by credits before marks — if so, enter the credit share as the weight and the arithmetic is identical.

What do I need on my final exam to pass?

Enter each completed component's marks and weight, set your pass mark as the target, and read the answer directly: the calculator subtracts the percentage points you have already banked from the target and divides by the weight still remaining. If two 40% papers earned you 60 points and you need 60% overall, the final 20% needs to supply nothing at all — you are already secured, and the calculator says so explicitly rather than making you infer it.

Why doesn't it show my GCSE grade or A-level letter?

Because nobody knows the boundaries yet — including the exam boards. Grade boundaries are set after each summer's marking, statistically anchored so results stay fair across easier and harder papers, and published at 8am on results day. Any calculator showing you a grade before then is applying made-up thresholds. The percentage this page computes is real and yours; the grade is decided later. Previous years' boundaries, published on each board's website, give a rough guide — labelled with their year.

How do I calculate a weighted grade by hand?

Convert each component to a percentage, multiply by its weight as a fraction, and add. Two papers at 80% and 70%, each worth 40%, contribute 0.8 × 40 + 0.7 × 40 = 60 percentage points of the final result. Divide by the total weight entered (80%) to get your running average, 75%. The reverse question — what the remaining work needs — is (target − points banked) ÷ remaining weight: for a 75% target, (75 − 60) ÷ 0.20 = 75%.

Does this work for university modules and coursework?

Yes — the arithmetic is identical. Enter each module or assessment with its weight (if your university weights by credits, use the credit share as the weight), and the calculator returns your weighted average and what any remaining assessment needs. Mixed maximum marks are fine, since every component is converted to a percentage first. The one thing to check locally is your institution's rounding and classification-borderline policy, which sits on top of the raw weighted average this page computes.

What happens if my target is impossible?

The calculator says so, in words: if reaching your target would take more than 100% on the remaining weight, it reports the requirement and then tells you the highest finish still available — your banked points plus the full remaining weight. That ceiling is often the genuinely useful number, because it reframes the decision: whether to chase a revised target, or to put the revision hours into a subject where the ceiling is still above the grade you want.
