Etsy charges on the whole order, not just the item. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to item price plus shipping plus gift wrap; payment processing applies to the same total (including any sales tax collected) at 3% + $0.25 for US sellers and 4% + £0.20 for UK sellers; and each listing costs $0.20 for a four-month term, auto-renewing, charged in US dollars whatever your market. UK sellers pay one fee Americans do not: a regulatory operating fee of 0.48% of item plus shipping — one of a country-specific table Etsy has repriced more than once in the last eighteen months.

The stack matters because sellers habitually price against the headline 6.5% and are then surprised by an effective rate half again higher. On a $50 item with $6 shipping, the transaction fee is $3.64, processing adds $1.93, the listing fee $0.20 — $5.77 in all, a 10.3% effective rate on a sale with no advertising involved at all.

The practical use of an itemized breakdown is pricing backwards. Decide the net you need per sale — materials, labour, and margin — then nudge the item price until the net-payout card lands there, rather than pricing first and discovering the payout after. Because two of the fees are percentages of the whole order and two are fixed, small orders carry proportionally heavier fees: the same fee stack that takes 10.3% of a $56 order takes over 14% of a $15 one. If you sell low-priced items, the fixed $0.45-worth of per-order charges is the number doing the damage, and bundling — one $30 order instead of three $10 ones — is the lever that moves it.

When a sale comes from an ad Etsy placed on Google, Facebook or elsewhere, an Offsite Ads fee applies on top of everything above: 15% of item plus shipping as standard, dropping to 12% permanently once your shop passes $10,000 of sales in any trailing 365 days — and at that threshold, participation stops being optional. The fee is capped at $100 per order.

It transforms the economics of an ad-attributed sale. The same $50-plus-$6 order that nets $50.23 organically nets $41.83 through a standard-rate Offsite Ad — an effective fee rate of 25.3%. That is not an argument against the program: an ad-attributed sale is one you might not have made. It is an argument for pricing so that a quarter-fee order is still profitable, and the calculator's checkbox exists so you can see both numbers side by side before setting the price rather than after the fee arrives.

A UK seller lists at £50 with £6 postage. The transaction fee is 6.5% of £56: £3.64. UK payment processing runs 4% + £0.20: £2.44. The regulatory operating fee adds 0.48% of £56: £0.27. The listing fee is charged as US$0.20 and converted at the market rate — roughly £0.16, which is why the calculator marks it approximate. Total: about £6.51, an 11.6% effective rate, for a net payout near £49.49.

Compare the same numbers for a US seller — $5.77 in fees on the equivalent sale, 10.3% — and the difference is the UK's higher processing rate plus the regulatory fee. Currency adds one more edge: if your listing currency differs from your payout currency, Etsy converts at a 2.5% spread, a fee this calculator leaves out deliberately because same-currency selling avoids it entirely. Price in your payout currency where you can.

Sales tax is handled differently by market and the calculator follows the policy: for US sellers Etsy collects and remits marketplace sales tax, and while the transaction fee excludes it, payment processing is charged on the tax-inclusive total — on heavily taxed orders the processing fee therefore runs slightly higher than the tax-free arithmetic here shows. Personalization charges take the transaction fee like gift wrap; refunded orders return most fees but not the listing fee.

The core structure — 6.5%, $0.20, the processing pairs — has held through the last eighteen months, but the regulatory-fee table was repriced country by country in that window (the UK rate rose from 0.32% to 0.48%).
