Freelance rates 2026: the break-even hourly rate, by country

The hourly rate a full-time freelancer must bill just to match their country's median salary — computed from official statistics, with the arithmetic shown. Not what freelancers charge; what standing still costs. Across eleven countries the spread is more than three to one.

Three things the table says

Standing still costs three times more in some countries than others. Matching the local median salary takes about €21 an hour in Spain but €47 in Germany and roughly A$79 (≈€48) in Australia. Same goal — earn what the median employee earns — wildly different price, driven almost entirely by what the median employee actually makes.

Market rates run far above break-even — and the gap is the price of risk. Germany's median full-timer earns €54,066, so €47/hour breaks even; the freelancermap 2026 study reports an average DACH freelance rate of €103/hour — 2.2× the break-even line. In the UK, £33.95/hour matches the median salary, while YunoJuno's 2026 report shows day rates of £385–£566 (£48–71/hour at eight hours): working freelancers bill 1.4–2.1× break-even. The margin funds downtime, sales time, sick days and self-funded benefits — it is not profit.

A US freelancer must bill about $57/hour before health insurance just to match the $65,052 median full-time wage — the highest break-even in the table after Australia, and the only one where the employer-benefits gap looms that large on top.

Methodology — deliberately simple

Break-even rate = median gross annual full-time salary ÷ 1,150 billable hours. The 1,150 comes from a realistic freelance year: 25 billable hours a week (the rest goes to sales, admin and unpaid work) across 46 working weeks (six weeks of holiday, bank holidays and sick days). Median salaries come from each country's official statistics office — the exact figure, reference year and source are linked per row; where the freshest official figure is weekly or monthly, the annualization is shown in the row.

This is the tax-neutral floor: it compares gross with gross, and deliberately does not model self-employment tax, which varies by country and regime and typically pushes the true matching rate higher. To price your own year — your tax rate, expenses, billable hours and weeks off — use the freelance rate calculator (or the UK version with 2026/27 bands). Morocco is absent from the table for an honest reason: no official median wage is published — a comparison there has to anchor on the minimum wage instead, which is a different statistic, and we would rather leave a gap than blur the two.

Cite freely with a link. The eleven rates above are recomputed whenever a source publishes fresh figures; the date stamp at the top is per-verification, and each row's source link is the authority if the two ever disagree.
